At a glance

Tehran is most visitors' first stop in Iran. It mixes Qajar-era palaces, world-class museums, chaotic bazaars, and quick escapes to the Alborz foothills. Plan 2–3 full days for the main sights plus one relaxed evening in the north.

Top sights

Golestan Palace (UNESCO) — A Qajar royal complex in the old centre with mirrored halls, tiled facades, and separate museums. Allow 2–3 hours minimum; metro: Panzdah-e Khordad (Line 1).

National Museum of Iran — Archaeology from prehistory through the Islamic period; pair with the Glass & Ceramics Museum nearby (Imam Khomeini metro area).

Grand Bazaar — One of the largest covered markets in the region; best for spices, copper, and people-watching. Go in the morning, watch your pockets in crowds.

National Jewelry Museum — Crown jewels and the Peacock Throne (check opening days; often closed on public holidays).

Darband & Tochal — Riverside teahouses and hiking paths in the north. Metro to Tajrish, then taxi or walk to the trail. Half-day to full day; cable car to Tochal ski area in season.

Azadi Tower & Milad Tower — Modern landmarks for city views; Azadi is iconic from the 1970s, Milad is a 435 m observation tower.

Getting around

The Tehran Metro is the fastest way to cross the city (separate women-only cars at peak times). Snapp (ride-hail) works well for short hops. Traffic is heavy — avoid cross-town taxis at rush hour.

Imam Khomeini Airport (IKA) is ~50 km west; allow 60–90 minutes to the centre. A metro link connects IKA to the network via Shahed station (check same-day hours).

Best time to visit

March–May and September–November offer mild weather. Summer is hot; winter can bring smog in January. Nowruz (Iranian New Year, ~21 March) empties the city but closes many shops.

Practical tips

  • Modest dress applies in public; women need a headscarf.
  • International bank cards do not work — budget cash or an Mehyar wallet.
  • Friday is quieter for museums; some sites close or limit tourist access on religious holidays.
  • Entry airport: IKA. Domestic flights use Mehrabad (west Tehran).
