At a glance
Shiraz is Iran's poetic heart — home to Hafez and Saadi — and the gateway to Persepolis. Plan 2–3 days in the city and one full day for ancient sites nearby.
In the city
Nasir al-Mulk (Pink Mosque) — Stained-glass winter prayer hall; visit 7:00–10:00 for light beams on carpets. Arrive early to avoid tour groups.
Shah Cheragh — Major Shia shrine with dazzling mirror work; dress modestly; free chadors available at the gate.
Hafez & Saadi tombs — Peaceful gardens; evening visits are atmospheric.
Eram Garden — Persian garden with a historic pavilion (UNESCO garden ensemble).
Vakil Bazaar & Vakil Mosque — Traditional bazaar architecture from the Zand era.
Karim Khan Citadel — Fortress in the city centre.
Qur'an Gate — Historic gate on the road toward Persepolis.
Day trips
Persepolis (Takht-e Jamshid) — Ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid Empire (~550–330 BC); allow half a day minimum, ideally with Naqsh-e Rustam royal tombs nearby (~60 km north). Hire a taxi or guided tour from Shiraz.
Optional: Pasargadae (tomb of Cyrus the Great) if you have a second excursion day.
Getting around
Shiraz International Airport (SYZ) has domestic and regional flights. City sights cluster fairly well for taxis; Snapp is widely used.
Best time to visit
March–May (especially April) for mild weather and blossoms. Summers are hot — schedule Persepolis for morning.
Practical tips
- Pink Mosque photography requires an early start.
- Shrine etiquette: speak quietly, follow local flow, photography rules vary by hall.
- Carry water and sun protection for Persepolis — little shade on site.
