There are attractions that you visit because they are famous, and there are attractions that you visit because the experience itself is unforgettable. The Talesh Sleigh, a mountain coaster built into the forested hillsides above the city of Talesh (also known as Hashtpar) in western Gilan Province, belongs firmly to the second category. It is not the most well-known tourist destination in Iran, but for anyone traveling through Gilan, it offers a genuinely unique combination of speed, forest scenery, and distant views of the Caspian Sea that few other attractions in the country can match.

What Is the Talesh Sleigh?

The Talesh Sleigh is a mountain coaster, sometimes called a alpine coaster or bobsled ride, located in the Siyahdaran Forest Park on the southeastern outskirts of Talesh city. The ride consists of single-person and double-person wagons that run on a steel rail track through the forest. Unlike traditional sledges that slide on snow, this is a wheeled vehicle on a fixed rail, and it operates in all seasons, including rain and snow.

The track was built in 2010 with engineering support from the German company Wiegand, a leading manufacturer of alpine coasters, and it meets international safety standards. The total track length is 1,055 meters, making it one of the longer mountain coaster tracks in Iran. Parts of the route follow a straight rail (the lift section), while other sections curve and twist through the trees in a spiral pattern, which is where the real excitement begins.

The maximum speed reaches 40 kilometers per hour, and riders have manual control over their speed using a brake lever. This means you can choose to go slow and enjoy the scenery or push the speed up for a more thrilling ride. For double wagons, the combined weight of both riders should not exceed 120 kilograms, and the heavier person should sit in the rear, where the brake control is located.

The Route and the Scenery

The track begins at the top of the Siyahdaran hill and descends through dense oak forest. On one side of the hill, you can see the distant shimmer of the Caspian Sea, and on the other side, the green canopy of the forest stretches across the hillsides. In spring and early summer, the forest is a vivid, almost electric green. In autumn, the oak leaves turn shades of gold and amber, creating a very different but equally beautiful atmosphere.

Along the way, automated cameras mounted on the track capture your ride. You can purchase printed photos or digital files at the end of the ride as a souvenir of the experience.

One of the unexpected highlights of the ride is the chance to see Maral deer, the Iranian subspecies of red deer, grazing in the forested slopes alongside the track. The animals are accustomed to the presence of the coaster and can often be spotted from the wagons, adding a wildlife element to what is already a scenic ride.

Spring and summer hours: 10:00 AM to 9:00 PM

Autumn and winter hours: 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM

The entire ride takes approximately 30 minutes, including the lift to the top and the descent. Tickets are purchased at the entrance. For the most current prices, check locally or ask your Mehyar guide, as ticket costs are adjusted periodically.

The complex offers a range of basic facilities to make your visit comfortable:

  • Gazebo and rest areas: Shaded structures for resting before or after the ride.
  • Restrooms: Clean facilities available near the entrance.
  • Parking: Free parking at the entrance to the complex.

Best Time to Visit

While the sleigh operates year-round and the ride is covered to protect against rain, the best time to visit is during the first half of the year, from spring through early autumn. The weather is warmer, the forest is at its greenest, and the views of the sea are clearest. Autumn is also beautiful, with the oak forest turning golden, and riding through the rain in autumn or winter has its own atmospheric charm.

Early mornings on weekdays tend to be the least crowded, so if you want to ride without long queues, plan accordingly.

Nearby Attractions

The Talesh region is rich with natural and historical attractions. If you are visiting the sleigh, consider combining it with one or more of the following:

Gisum Forest Park: Located about 29 kilometers south of the sleigh, Gisum is one of the most beautiful forest parks in Gilan. An 80-hectare forest where the trees form a natural tunnel over the road, and where the forest meets the sandy shore of the Caspian Sea. It is an ideal place for a picnic or a long walk.

Saragah Lagoon: About 10 kilometers northwest of Talesh, this small lagoon sits amid rice paddies and forest. The calm water, surrounding silence, and frequent mist create a dreamy setting for photography and relaxation.

Subatan Highland: Located 20 kilometers northwest of Talesh at an altitude of 1,900 to 2,500 meters, Subatan is a highland pasture area with cool summer weather and stunning landscapes. The best time to visit is from mid-spring to late summer.

Asalem to Khalkhal Road: One of the most scenic mountain roads in Iran, running from the Gilan side of the Talesh highlands into the Ardabil Province. The road passes through dense forest, mountain meadows, and traditional villages.

Lisar Protected Area: A 31,000-hectare protected natural area north of Talesh, home to diverse wildlife including wild boar, jackal, and various bird species.

Lisar Castle: A historical fortress in the Lisar area, dating back to the Sassanid era, perched on a hilltop with views over the surrounding countryside.

Practical Tips

  • Wear comfortable clothing and secure loose items before riding. The wagons are open-sided, so hats and sunglasses can blow off at higher speeds.
  • The ride is suitable for children and adults alike, though young children should ride with an adult in a double wagon.
  • If you are visiting in winter or during rain, bring a light waterproof jacket. The wagons have protective covers, but the boarding area is partially exposed.
  • Combine your sleigh visit with a walk in the Siyahdaran Forest Park. The oak forest around the complex is peaceful and worth exploring on foot.
  • Bring cash for tickets and souvenirs, as card payment facilities may not always be available at the complex.
  • For a full day in the area, visit the sleigh in the morning and drive to Gisum Forest Park or the Asalem-Khalkhal road in the afternoon.
  • If you are planning a longer stay in the Talesh region, consider booking accommodation in Hashtpar or one of the eco-lodges in the surrounding villages. Mehyar can help you find suitable options.

The Talesh Sleigh is not a large or extravagant attraction, but it offers something that few places in Iran can match: a high-speed ride through ancient oak forest, with views of the Caspian Sea on one side and the green mountains of Gilan on the other, all in a region that still feels undiscovered by mass tourism. For travelers looking for an active experience in Gilan beyond the usual market visits and rice paddies, the Talesh Sleigh is well worth the detour.
